VoiceOver PRO is more than a dictation tool. It’s a structured reporting layer built for pathology, working on top of Epic’s enterprise foundation. Accuracy through structure
It isn’t about the speech engine. Every engine turns sound into words well enough; what moves accuracy is how much of the report is exposed to free-text dictation at all. In PRO most of it is structured — protocol-driven fields, synoptic elements, voice commands that select rather than transcribe, and values validated before the case closes. Less of the report carries transcription risk, and what does gets checked.
Two-command reporting
A case-number command or barcode scan launches the case in Epic and opens Report Builder. The pathologist dictates every section at once (gross, microscopic, diagnosis) and a single “send report” command places each section in its correct Epic field. Field-level placement runs on Epic’s speech APIs, so it needs PRO and Epic in the same environment — both local, or both virtual.
Smart templating & automation
The PRO Report Builder’s smart templating builds structured, protocol-driven report scaffolds for each specimen type, and PRO automates the repetitive steps around them, so pathologists spend their time on the diagnosis, not on assembling the report.
Hands-free grossing
At the grossing bench, PRO handles the back-and-forth with Epic for you: scanning a cassette while Report Builder is in focus triggers the commands that bring Epic forward and send the scan across, so PAs keep both hands on the specimen. The single-scan setup needs PRO and Epic on the same workstation — both local, or both inside your virtual environment — so we confirm your deployment topology before we promise it.
Voice-driven stain ordering
“Order CD3 part A” places the order without a click, and PRO can bundle panels so “order breast panel part A” orders ER, PR, Her2, and Ki-67 at once.
Voice-driven block ordering
“Order 5 blocks part A” orders and prints the blocks, with PRO routing them to the correct printer at sites that run more than one.

When the pathologist signs out, the report flows back into Beaker as the system of record — each section landing in its matching Beaker section rather than as one block of text, with the completed CAP synoptic landing as text in the report. Pathologists can dictate the whole case in a single PRO window and let PRO file every section where it belongs, or dictate straight into Beaker’s fields if the lab prefers that.

During an Epic transition, it’s easy for pathology to look like it only needs a speech tool and get folded into Epic’s built-in dictation. What that decision actually removes is everything layered above dictation: the reporting protocols built around how your lab actually reports, voice-driven stain and block ordering, structured field validation, and the AP-system mapping that lands the right data in the right field. That layer took years to refine, and it’s easy to overlook for one reason — it has been working quietly the whole time.
Report accuracy is part of what’s at stake, and it’s worth being precise about how. This isn’t an argument about speech engines; Epic’s built-in dictation turns speech into text as well as any, and VoiceOver PRO runs on top of it either way. Radiology isn’t expected to use generic reporting tools. Why should pathology?
No one asks a radiology department to give up PowerScribe and dictate into generic speech. That argument was settled twenty years ago, because specialty work needs specialty-specific reporting. Pathology does the same diagnostic work, with CAP synoptic requirements radiology doesn’t even carry. It deserves the same seat at the table.
